SAN DIEGO -- A 31-year-old man died in an accident after crashing an all-terrain vehicle on a private road, the California Highway Patrol said Saturday.

The Medical Examiner's office identified the victim as Scott Allen Wolverton of Albany, Oregon.

Wolverton was driving a 2004 Polaris Ranger, a two-passenger off-road vehicle, west on private Eagle Gap road off Mesa Grande Road near state Route 76 when he "failed to negotiate a curve," drove over the edge of the road and overturned the vehicle, which landed on top of him, said the dispatcher.

Officers at the scene said he was driving late at night to seek a place where he could get a cell phone signal.

The crash was reported at 11 p.m. Friday when a passerby spotted the ATV, according to a CHP dispatcher.
