SAN DIEGO -- The carcass of a roughly 25-foot-long whale that had twice washed to shore was removed from the sand permanently Tuesday, 10News reported. The dead whale first washed to shore last Friday on a beach in Del Mar near 29th street. The first attempt to move the mammal was unsuccessful, as the whale washed back to shore Saturday on Torrey Pines State Beach after being towed to sea.
Starting about 7 a.m., California State Parks personnel used a heavy skip loader to hoist the roughly 25-foot cetacean into a hauler truck at Torrey Pines State Beach, department spokesman Brian Ketterer said. The crew got the heavily decomposed and highly foul-smelling remains of the whale off the sand and on the road, en route to its final destination of Miramar Landfill, by shortly before 9 a.m., Ketterer said."We dug a quick hole for it, and allowed the contractor to put it in there. Within minutes it was covered up with daily garbage," said Jose Ysea of the Environmental Services Department. The as-yet undetermined cost of disposing of the huge carcass will be shared by the California Department of Parks and Recreation and the city of Del Mar, according to Ketterer.
