CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- The California chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving chose the Chula Vista Police Department as its "Law Enforcement Agency of the Year," a department spokesman said Thursday.

The award will be presented at the Statewide Law Enforcement and Community Recognition Dinner on April 18 in Sacramento.

Police spokesman Bernard Gonzales said he believes Chula Vista's numerous traffic-focused campaigns impressed MADD officials who selected them.

"We've done a lot of work in the last five years in trying to curtail DUI but also people driving illegally on suspended licenses or no licenses," Gonzales said.

Chula Vista Police Department also has a number of campaigns going on from pedestrian safety to combating street racing.
