ENCINITAS, Calif. -- Nearly $1 million in fixtures, appliances, doors, toilets and equipment was missing Wednesday from one of San Diego County's most controversial foreclosed homes, authorities said. The San Diego County Sheriff's Department is investigating the theft in the 3200 block of Fortuna Ranch Road in Encinitas' high-end Olivenhain neighborhood, according to Detective Steven Ashkar."It's like a car up on blocks," Ashkar told The San Diego Union- Tribune. "It's been stripped."
The multi-million-dollar, 16,000-square-foot home was built by electrical engineer Suzy Brown to serve as a drug-rehabilitation center in a venture with alternative medicine physician Deepak Chopra and 60 unnamed investors. It never opened.Neighbors dubbed it the "Monster House" because of its size and sued Brown in an attempt to keep it from being built. Brown fought back and won a construction permit in 2004 but by the time the home was ready, Chopra had dropped out.The home is now owned by Chevy Chase Bank, Ashkar said, adding that Brown vacated the premises around March 22.According to Ashkar, the theft was discovered several days after Brown left the home. The Spanish hacienda-style house sits on 1.24 acres and cost about $13 million to build and furnish, according to the Union-Tribune. In February, it failed to sell at a bank foreclosure auction with a starting bid of $2.3 million.
