SAN DIEGO -- The fight against the controversial Sunrise Powerlink is picking up steam -- to the tune of $500,000, 10News reported. The 123-mile line would deliver electricity to more than 600,000 homes, but one consumer watchdog group is preparing to fight the proposed transmission line.A meeting was held Monday that was intended to drum up support from community members to fight San Diego Gas & Electric's Sunrise Powerlink.
"This fight is far from over," said San Diego County Supervisor Dianne Jacob. After Jacob made that statement, those in attendance learned from Utilities Consumer Action Network executive director Michael Shames that his group had $500,000 set aside for a court battle."I've already hired an attorney to fight the Public Utilities Commission's decision both at the Court of Appeals and at the Supreme Court," said Shames. The PUC is the state agency that gave SDG&E the go-ahead to build the $1.9 billion Sunrise project last December. That decision was made despite objections from two of the PUC's administrative law judges. It is a battle Shames said can be won."They get to look at the law and determine whether the PUC had the economic justification, and the legal justification to do what they did," said Shames. There is no date set on when UCAN will file its appeal.SDG&E representatives told 10News it was moving forward with construction of the powerlink and will meet with vendors to finalize engineering plans.
