Brenda Van Dam To Unveil 'Danielle's Law'

Law Makes Child Killers Eligible For Death Penalty

Attorney Gloria Allred and Brenda van Dam -- the mother of 7-year-old Danielle van Dam -- will be in Sacramento Thursday to lobby for a law that would make anyone who kills a child in the home eligible for the death penalty.

The need for "Danielle's Law" became obvious, Allred said, after the attorney for David Westerfield argued that his client could be ineligible for capital punishment if he killed the 7-year-old in her bedroom, rather than kidnapped her.

Westerfield was convicted of kidnapping and murder during a kidnapping, which resulted in him being sent to death row.

He is unlikely to ever be executed, given his age and the hundreds of inmates already on death row.

Allred and Brenda van Dam will be joined in Sacramento by Assemblywoman Sarah Reyes, D-Fresno.

Meanwhile, the members of the search team that helped find Danielle will be honored Thursday by the heads of the three largest law enforcement agencies in San Diego County.

Karsten Heimburger, Christopher Morgan, Joseph Nemes and Shawna Miller will receive awards at the 12th annual Salute to Local Heroes.
