San Diegans Go Online To Barter Services

Last week California's unemployment rate was 10.5 percent.

At this point, some people are willing to do just about anything to find a job.

Many San Diegans have gone online to barter their services, 10News reported.

Mike Ayer has been called an excellent mechanic. The problem is, there is just not enough work.

"It's off and on whenever anybody wants anything done," said Ayer.

The other problem is Ayer is in constant pain, as he desperately needs to see a dentist.

But with no insurance and very little money, that is not an option for him right now.

"He's in so much pain sometimes and it worries me. It's the well being of my family," said Ayer's girlfriend, Nicolette Hall.

With no other options, Hall posted an ad on the Craigslist Web site.

The ad said in exchange for dental services or at least money for a down payment, Ayer was willing to trade his expertise as an auto-mechanic.

"I haven't gone to a dentist and I know it's going to be really expensive, but at least this will get me started anyway," said Ayer.

For many around San Diego it's a sign of the times. On any given day with a Web site like Craigslist, there are many people bartering their services for cash, food or even a place to live.

For example, one ad on Craigslist offered to trade one full-body, one-hour professional massage of your choice in exchange for doing that person's taxes.

Craig Howard posted an ad bartering his services as a golf pro on Craigslist a month ago. He said in these tough economic times, there are not a lot of takers.

"I found out it's a lot different than what I thought," said Howard.

Howard played on the Canadian tour, and as a junior golfer he was competing with champions like David Duval and Justin Leonard.

Howard came to California to teach as a pro, but there has not been work for months.

"I have a suitcase, backpack and golf clubs. I'm moving around to different places, sleep where I can," said Howard.

Howard just moved out of a shelter but he's hoping somebody finds his ad that could use a few golf lessons and possibly provide a roof over his head.

"I hate to say it but I have one skill -- I'm good at golf. There's people out there who love to play golf and that are well off enough that maybe they have something for me," said Howard.
