SAN DIEGO -- An autopsy is pending Wednesday on the body of a young man who apparently died accidentally in a hot tub at a Mission Beach hotel following a night of partying and drinking in celebration of his 21st birthday.

Michael Mayfield of San Diego was found floating face-down in a hot tub at Paradise Point Resort about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office. He was pronounced dead at the scene, the Medical Examiner's office reported.

"He and three of his friends came here and rented a room, and they celebrated by drinking some alcohol," San Diego police Lt. Karen Tenney told reporters.

The group went into the hot tub in the early morning and soaked for a time before three of them went back to their room, according to Tenney.

About 15 minutes later, Mayfield's friends went back to check on him and found him floating lifelessly in the water, the lieutenant said.

There were some scrapes on the dead man's face, but it was unclear if the injuries had anything to do with his death, according to Tenney.

Mayfield turned 21 on Monday.
