Bicyclist Struck By Suspected DUI Driver

SAN DIEGO -- A motorist whose vehicle hit a bicyclist on a Clairemont Mesa street Monday was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, authorities said.The accident occurred about 10:30 a.m. on Balboa Avenue, near Charger Boulevard and Interstate 805, according to San Diego police.Medics took the bicyclist to a hospital to treat for head injuries that initially were considered serious but later were downgraded to minor, SDPD spokeswoman Monica Munoz said.Officers arrested the motorist, 42-year-old Jeffrey Althoff, on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, she said.Police closed down the eastbound lanes of Balboa Avenue for about an hour to allow for investigations.
