General Motors is reviewing the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) new roof strength testing program and will evaluate it in the context of our product designs.GM develops the safety systems in its vehicles to perform in a range of tests and real-world conditions. The Chevrolet Equinox and Pontiac Torrent compact SUV crossovers meet or exceed all federal safety standards and received the highest possible rating of 5-stars for the frontal test, and a rating of 4-stars on both the side crash and rollover tests in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) New Car Assessment Program (NCAP).GM takes an integrated approach to safety that employs a system of safety features that help to protect vehicle occupants before, during, and after a crash. As part of this continuous safety approach, the Equinox and Torrent come standard with StabiliTrak, GM’s electronic stability control system that helps drivers maintain control during sudden maneuvers or in low traction conditions.
A comprehensive seat belt and air bag system complements the strong safety cage in these vehicles and includes frontal air bags with GM’s passenger sensing system. Standard head curtain side-impact air bags with rollover protection sensors, which keep the air bags inflated for approximately five seconds after deployment, help protect occupants in a rollover and help keep occupants from being ejected. OnStar, the leading provider of in-vehicle safety, security and information services is also standard.Electronic stability control is one of the most significant advancements in automotive safety since the safety belt. As the first U.S. manufacturer to offer this technology in the 1997 model year, GM remains committed to the advancement with 98 percent of GM models now offering StabiliTrak as standard or optional equipment.
