UPDATED: 1:00 pm PST February 26, 2009

"Grey's Anatomy" actress and 2005 Tony Award winner Sara Ramirez has donated $20,000 to the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, the San Diego Unified School District announced Thursday.

Ramirez, who attended the school from fourth through 12th grade, has played Dr. Callie Torres on the popular ABC television show since 2006 and won her stage award for best performance by a featured actress in a musical for her role as The Lady in the Lake in Monty Python's "Spamalot."

SCPA "played a huge role in where and who I am today so I would like to take this time to give a little something back," said Ramirez, who grew up in Tierrasanta.

The money will be split among the school's drama, music and dance departments as well as a piano fund.

The native of Mazatlan, Mexico, has also appeared in the films "Spiderman," "You've Got Mail" and "Washington Heights."
