SAN DIEGO -- San Diego Gas & Electric continues to be met with opposition as it tries to gain support for its Sunrise Powerlink project.Dozens of people gathered in Lakeside on Wednesday as part of a community meeting to protest the 123-mile project, which runs along Interstate 8 from Imperial County to San Diego County. The community meeting was held next door to a project-related meeting held by SDG&E.
SDG&E has said the project would deliver electricity to more than 600,000 homes, including renewable energy.Environmentalists and many East County residents expressed concern about the portion of the route that runs through the scenic El Monte Valley. Many remain skeptical on how much renewable energy would be produced, as well as the cost and reliability of the Powerlink. The nearly $2 billion project was already approved by the California Public Utilities Commission.Lawsuits challenging the project are expected in the coming months.
