Drug Smugglers Tunnel Discovered At Border

POSTED: 5:16 pm PST February 23, 2009

An apparent cross-border smuggling tunnel was discovered a quarter-mile east of Otay Mesa Port of Entry over the weekend, authorities reported Monday.

Members of the San Diego Tunnel Task Force found the underground passageway -- a roughly 3-foot-wide by 3-foot-tall, wood-reinforced channel without lighting or ventilation equipment -- about 110 feet north of the international line late Saturday afternoon, according to the U.S. Border Patrol.

It is believed to connect to a deactivated natural-gas pipe that runs underneath the border, USBP Agent Jerry Conlin said.

The shaft appeared to have been used recently, he said, "but for what purpose is still being investigated."

There have been no arrests, according to the Border Patrol.
