Police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Friday morning on El Cajon Blvd. in the North Park area, 10News reported.

According to authorities, the incident happened shortly after 9 a.m. at the Old Coin Shop on the 2400 block of El Cajon Blvd, near Texas Street.

Two men attempted to rob the shop, but one of the men was shot by an employee, police said.

"Both the owner and his employee armed themselves, at which point an exchange of gunfire erupted between the (robbers) and the victims," SDPD Lt. Terry McManus said.

The proprietor and his employee were uninjured, McManus said.

Police identified the injured man as 26-year-old Michael Anthony Watkins Jr. Watkins suffered gunshot wounds to his left leg and buttocks. He was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.

Police urged drivers to avoid the area as they search for the second man allegedly involved in the attempted robbery.

Officers found discarded clothing and a handgun in an alley 2 blocks from the shooting scene.

The second man allegedly involved in the incident is a black male, about 5 feet 10 inches tall with a thin build. He was last seen running southbound from the incident location, wearing a grey sweater and dark colored pants.
