Clinton To Speak At Hyatt Despite Prop. 8 Boycott

Former President Bill Clinton is expected in San Diego this weekend to deliver a speech at the Manchester Grand Hyatt despite an ongoing boycott of the hotel by same-sex marriage proponents.

San Diego City Council member Todd Gloria, labor leader Lorena Gonzalez and six others sent Clinton a letter Thursday, urging him to cancel his appearance before the International Franchise Association, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

A spokesman for the former president responded by saying Clinton is sympathetic to the cause but will stick to his plans to speak before the association's 2,500 members on Sunday.

Clinton "feels like he has an obligation to the people who invited him to speak," spokesman Matthew McKenna said, according to the newspaper.

Same-sex marriage proponents have been boycotting the hotel because its owner, Doug Manchester, donated $125,000 to the Yes on Proposition 8 campaign.

The proposition, which narrowly passed last November, overturned a previous California Supreme Court decision that legalized same-sex marriage in the state.

Clinton was among those who campaigned against Prop. 8.

According to McKenna, had Clinton been invited to the hotel by Manchester rather than the trade group, he would have canceled the appearance, the Union-Tribune reported.
