Man Dies After Pedestrian Walkway Collapse

POSTED: 1:04 pm PST February 11, 2009
UPDATED: 5:10 pm PST February 11, 2009

A man who was crushed when a structure covering a pedestrian walkway collapsed alongside an East Village street last summer died in a trauma center Wednesday of complications from his injuries, authorities said.

Tyrone Allen, 49, was pronounced dead at Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest shortly after 2 a.m., according to the county Medical Examiner's Office.

Allen was one of 16 people injured when the wood-topped shelter at the edge of an affordable-housing construction site on the south side of Imperial Avenue fell shortly before 12:30 p.m. last Aug. 28.

The accident left the San Diego resident and two women, ages 57 and 60, hospitalized with severe trauma. Thirteen others ranging in age from 16 to 64 suffered minor to moderately serious injuries.

All of the victims were walking or loitering underneath the structure, which was meant to protect pedestrians passing the construction zone near 15th Street.

Following an extended hospital stay, Allen was released into a nursing home, where he stayed until his recent relapse, according to the county agency.

The cause of the collapse remains under investigation, said Erika Monterroza, a spokeswoman for the state Division of Occupational Safety and Health, or Cal/OSHA.

The probe, which by law must be complete within six months of the accident, is due to be released within the next several weeks, Monterroza said.

The builder of the low-income residential project east of Petco Park, Allgire General Contractors Inc. of Carlsbad, temporarily closed down the site following the structural failure.
