Santa Ana Winds Return To San Diego

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego County will being buffeted by Santa Ana winds Friday, under sunny skies and warmer temperatures, forecasters said.According to the National Weather Service, wind gusts of 30 to 55 mph are likely Friday afternoon, and 50 mph gusts overnight.Cal Fire has increased staffing and equipment because the windy and dry conditions could increase the risk of wildfires, said Capt. Nick Schuler. Firefighters' days off have been canceled and all staff are on call through the weekend, he said.Also on standby are 18 engines, three air tankers and five helicopters, including two from the military, Schuler said.A wind advisory is in effect for the valleys through Sunday evening. In the mountains, a more serious high wind warning is scheduled for the same period, according to the Weather Service.Afternoon highs should be in the low 70s except for the mountains, where the mercury is expected to top out at 66 degrees.Visit 10News' Wildfire section.
