A 21-year-old Camp Pendleton Marine was in police custody Friday on suspicion of causing the county's only fatal, drunken driving crash on New Year's Day.

Quintin Garza III of Oceanside was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving Thursday morning after he allegedly caused a two-car crash that killed a 29-year-old father of a newborn baby girl, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Guadencio Reyes-Guaintana of San Marcos was killed after his vehicle and another vehicle driven by Garza both veered off El Camino Real at La Orilla, on the western edge of Rancho Santa Fe, shortly before 5 a.m. Thursday, according to a North County Fire Protection District dispatcher and the San Diego County medical examiner's Office.

According to the medical examiner's Web site, Reyes-Guaintana's 2001 GMC Jimmy went off the roadway first and Garza's 2008 Dodge Caliber followed and landed on the first vehicle's roof. Both vehicles were traveling northbound.

Reyes-Guaintana died at the scene. Garza suffered minor injuries, the CHP reported.

Garza was booked into the Vista jail in lieu of $200,000 bail. He will be arraigned Jan. 5, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department's Web site.

Reyes-Guaintana is survived by his live-in girlfriend and newborn daughter, according to the medical examiner's Web site.
