Chargers' Stadium Lease Talks Begin

Lawsuit Filed To Keep Chargers From Moving To Another City

The San Diego Chargers' task force will meet Thursday to look into what the team is offering for a new lease on the stadium, 10News reported.

Meantime, a lawsuit was filed in Superior Court by local attorney Mike Aguirre to prevent the Chargers from negotiating a move to another city.

The lawsuit, filed Wednesday on behalf of Peter Direnza, a former county grand jury foreman, also seeks to stop the Chargers from renegotiating their contract with the city until they can prove the team faces genuine financial hardship.

Aguirre claims that as an interested citizen under California law he has the right to file the lawsuit to halt fraudulent or unfair business practices.

He allegedly believes that the Chargers are acting fraudulently and unfairly by selling multiyear season tickets while thinking about leaving San Diego.

A Chargers official rejected the claim.

"We are focused on the Chargers' great season and on our work with the community to redesign the Qualcomm (Stadium) site in the best interests of all San Diegans, and we don't have any time to waste commenting on self-serving lawsuits brought by failed, perennial political candidates," Mark Fabiani, special counsel to Chargers President Dean Spanos, told the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Aguirre is a trial attorney specializing in fraud cases. He is a former assistant U.S. attorney and has made unsuccessful attempts to be elected to the U.S. Congress, the San Diego City Council and as San Diego district attorney.
