Arrest Made In Fatal Alpine Hit-And-Run

POSTED: 11:37 am PST December 3, 2008
UPDATED: 9:01 am PST December 5, 2008

A 44-year-old man was in custody Friday on suspicion of being the driver in a hit-and-run accident that killed a cyclist in Alpine.

Travis Weber allegedly struck Edward Costa, 30, Tuesday afternoon while the father of two was riding his bicycle in a bike lane on eastbound Alpine Boulevard, said California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer Brian Pennings.

Weber was arrested Thursday night after he went into the Liar's Den bar on Alpine Boulevard in view of Costa's family and friends who were gathered for a candlelight vigil, Pennings said.

People at the vigil took notice of Weber's pickup truck as he parked because it had the same type of front-end damage described from the accident, Pennings said.

Authorities were called and towed the vehicle for evidence after arrested Weber, he said.

The vigil was being held on Alpine Boulevard, near East Victoria Drive, where Costa was struck and killed. Costa was a self-employed construction worker. He is survived by his wife and two sons.
