Crews began installing an 18-foot-tall sculpture of a surfer in Imperial Beach, Tuesday.

"The Spirit of Imperial Beach" sculpture is meant to honor the city's surfing culture and the lifeguards who protect the beaches, according to the Port of San Diego.

The $2.8 million bronze statue, which features a surfer and his longboard, is being installed at the end of Palm Avenue.

It was created by the late artist A. Wasil, a resident of Coronado and a San Diego State University graduate who later went on to teach at both SDSU and San Diego City College, according to the port.

The statue will be dedicated during a ceremony on Jan. 3.
