A parolee who jumped off the second story of a parking garage to escape police after allegedly stealing some beer has died of the injuries he suffered in his evasion attempt, it was reported Tuesday.

Manuel Bareno, 26, of Chula Vista allegedly stole two six-packs of beer from La Bella's Pizza Garden on Third Avenue around 9:30 a.m. Sunday and was chased on foot into a three-story parking garage on F Street, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Bareno jumped when police were about 15 feet away, according to the newspaper.

He hit the ground and suffered a broken leg and major head trauma. Paramedics took him to UCSD Medical Center, where he died about 12:30 p.m. Monday, the Union-Tribune reported.

Bareno was a parolee and allegedly battered his grandmother at her home on Roosevelt Street about 10 minutes prior to the beer theft.
