Thanksgiving Storm Brings Rain, Traffic Problems

POSTED: 2:50 pm PST November 24, 2008
UPDATED: 4:35 am PST November 28, 2008

Lindbergh Field reported record rainfall again Thursday, nearly an inch more than other areas in San Diego County, prompting the National Weather Service to question the reading.

The airport reported that 1.26 inches had fallen by noon.

If the Weather Service accepts the report, it would break the record for rainfall at the airport on this date, which was .68 inches in 1931, Wasowski said.

On Wednesday, Lindbergh Field reported 1.05 inches, which broke a record for rainfall on that date set in 1909.

The airport reported that 2.35 inches of rain has fallen there since Tuesday, compared to 1.26 inches at Brown Field, 1.28 inches at Montgomery Field and 1.42 inches in Fashion Valley, said Stan Wasowski of the Weather Service.

"Lindbergh is not noted for (more rain than the surrounding area)," Wasowski said. "I'm not saying it couldn't happen. When you get something like that, you double check. We're kind of questioning it because other places haven't gotten nearly as much."

Weather Service technicians may check the measuring system at Lindbergh on Friday, Wasowski said.

The storm dropped much-needed rain in San Diego County, but contributed to more than 319 traffic accidents since the rain began Wednesday.

From midnight to noon Thursday, 143 accidents were reported on rain-soaked county highways and freeways, said California Highway Patrol Officer Rob Sanchez.

During a normal "good weather" day, the CHP reports on average 50 to 75 crashes in a 24-hour period.

Quarry Road at Lakeview Avenue was shut down because of flooding from 7:30 a.m. until 1:15 p.m., according to the CHP.

The road was still flooded at Borrego Salton Sea Way around 4 p.m., the CHP reported.

Roads should dry and warmer weather is on its way this weekend, Wasowski said. By Sunday, highs could reach into the 80s.

"It will feel real hot after this mild weather," the forecaster said.
