SAN DIEGO -- The stepfather of a 2-year-old South Park boy reported missing nearly seven months ago was in custody in Maryland on drug charges Thursday, police said.
A bounty hunter arrested Tieray Jones, 23, in San Diego on Monday and took him to Maryland to face charges unrelated to Jahi Turner's disappearance last spring, said San Diego police Lt. Mike Hurley.
"It has nothing to do with our case," he said.
Police won't say whether Jones is considered a suspect in the boy's disappearance.
Jones told police the tyke vanished from a Balboa Park playground the afternoon of April 25. He said he'd left the boy with a woman and two other children while walking to a nearby soda machine, then returned minutes later and found him gone.
Authorities soon decided Jahi had been kidnapped and questioned Jones repeatedly, while never officially naming him as a suspect.
Intensive law enforcement and citizen searches, including a week of combing through the city's Miramar-area landfill, turned up no sign of the boy.
The stepfather and Jahi's mother, Tameka Jones, 18, had moved with the boy to San Diego from Frederick, Md., days before the presumed abduction.
