SAN DIEGO -- An Oceanside woman who got into a road rage dispute that ended with her and her 8-year-old son being shot by an off-duty police officer, pleaded guilty Monday to felony child endangerment and misdemeanor driving under the influence.

Rachel Silva, 27, faces up to four years in state prison when she's sentenced March 5 by Judge David Danielson.

Silva and her son were wounded by San Diego police Officer Frank White on March 15 in the parking lot of a Lowe's home improvement store in Oceanside.

The state Attorney General's Office, which prosecuted Silva, alleged that she willfully placed her son under circumstances likely to produce great bodily injury or death.

Misdemeanor counts of driving while possessing marijuana, and driving on a suspended and revoked license were dropped in exchange for her plea.

The prosecution alleged that Silva had a blood-alcohol level of .15 percent when she pulled out of a gas station driveway into the path of White and his wife, who is a Carlsbad police dispatcher, around 9 p.m. The officer had to swerve to avoid the woman's car, and she tailgated him, revving her engine and honking.

Police said she pulled up alongside the couple's vehicle in the parking lot, still shouting, and sideswiped their car, prompting the officer to fire his gun five times.

Silva was struck by two bullets in the arm and her son was hit twice in the left leg.

White and his wife were uninjured, but the officer faces trial on a felony charge of grossly negligent discharge of a firearm and a misdemeanor count of exhibiting a weapon. He could be sentenced to up to nine years in prison if convicted.

His supporters say he identified himself as a police officer, and contend Silva was the aggressor.

Silva's lawyer, Michael Pancer, said sentencing was set for March so authorities can see how well she responds to substance abuse treatment in a residential rehabilitation clinic.

In September, she admitted that her actions amounted to a violation of probation for a 2007 drunken driving conviction in Temecula.
