Gay Marriage Protesters Target Mormon Temple

POSTED: 2:34 pm PST November 9, 2008
UPDATED: 2:59 pm PST November 9, 2008

About 150 opponents of voter-passed Proposition 8 rallied Sunday in front of the San Diego Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

The protest was one of a series around the state in recent days against the Mormon Church, which gay and lesbian activists blame for providing financial support for the measure, which amends the state constitution to define marriage as between one man and one woman.

Passage of the measure overturned a state Supreme Court ruling that led to about 18,000 marriages between people of the same sex this summer.

County clerks have stopped issuing marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples, but opponents have filed legal challenges to the proposition.

San Diego police Sgt. Ray Battrick said officers were at the temple -- the distinctive white building near Interstate 5 and Nobel Drive -- and the protesters were "cooperative." Temple officials were not immediately available for comment.

On Friday, the church headquarters in Salt Lake City issued a statement condemning the protests and saying its support for Proposition 8 was "part of its democratic right in a free election."

It was pointed out that people of many faiths, ethnicities and political affiliations voted for the measure.

"While those who disagree with our position on Proposition 8 have the right to make their feelings known, it is wrong to target the church and its sacred places of worship for being part of the democratic process," the statement read.

About 10,000 Proposition 8 opponents marched from Hillcrest to North Park Saturday.
