VISTA, Calif. -- Homeowners in rural Vista will meet this weekend to hear the local fire department discuss a proposal that could cause their fire insurance rates to skyrocket and make it more difficult to sell their homes, it was reported Friday. The proposal, which was drawn up by CalFire and designates parts of rural Vista "Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones," is an update to the city's fire hazard map.The Vista City Council was to discuss and adopt the map at its Oct. 28 meeting, but the agenda item was pulled after scores of homeowners demanded more information, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
"We are very worried that this is going to affect housing prices and insurance premiums," homeowner Stephanie Jackel told the newspaper. "What can be done to mitigate the threat of fire? I think a lot of concern has arisen out of a lack of information."If the council accepts the very high fire designation, homeowners will be forced under state law to inform prospective buyers whenever homes in the area go on the market. The Vista Fire Department will hold a meeting at 10 a.m. at Vista City Hall on Eucalyptus Avenue on Saturday to explain how the map works. For those who cannot attend this weekend's meeting, another meeting has been scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday at City Hall.
