Sex Scandals Prompt Call For School Board Member's Resignation

Helix High School officials are calling for the resignation of a Grossmont Union High School District board member who recently accused Helix of covering up teacher-student sex scandals, it was reported Friday.

But the board member says he won't budge.

During a special meeting Thursday night, the La Mesa charter school voted to send a letter to the Grossmont district asking that its board seek the immediate resignation of trustee Jim Kelly, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

The letter will also state that, instead of a resignation, the district can issue a formal apology to Helix if Kelly was speaking on behalf of the board or censure Kelly if he was speaking as an individual, according to the newspaper.

At a news conference last week, Kelly said the La Mesa charter school is hiding information regarding two incidents of teachers having sexual relationships with students.

The two cases are in addition to the four Helix teachers who have already been convicted of having sex with students in past two years, Kelly said.

Proof of the alleged incidents was not offered.

"Mr. Kelly has made outrageous and libelous statements which cause unnecessary fear, disruption and harm to the charter school, its community and its servants," Helix High board Chairwoman Cathy Singer said at a special meeting Thursday night, the Union-Tribune reported.

Kelly told the newspaper he will not be resigning.

"If they choose to practice bullying techniques to get me to back down, bring it on," he told the Union-Tribune.
