VISTA, Calif. -- A North County couple is facing felony elder abuse charges Friday for allegedly leaving an 84-year-old man with Parkinson's disease in a van while they gambled at a casino.Rancho Bernardo resident Tessie Magan, 49, and her husband, Donnie Magan, 48, were arraigned in a Vista courtroom Wednesday and face up to four years in prison, if convicted, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported. The alleged abuse took place Saturday at Valley View Casino.
Tessie Magan, the elderly man's caretaker, offered to take the man to a barbecue but instead drove him to the North County casino, deputy district attorney Steven Carver told the newspaper.Once at the casino, the Magans left the man in their van for at least 90 minutes while they went inside and gambled, the Union-Tribune reported.A security guard spotted the man inside the van and called authorities, who arrived to find the man unconscious.Temperatures on Saturday were in the high 80s to low 90s, and firefighters had to break a window to get to the man, Capt. Jim Eighme of the San Pasqual Fire Department told the newspaper. The man was hospitalized overnight and released the next day, the Union-Tribune reported. The couple's next court date is set for Nov. 3.A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 5.
