Police Dog Sniffs Out Parolee

Parolee Had $2,200 In Cash And Various Forms Of Identification When Arrested

POSTED: 10:54 am PDT October 21, 2008

A 25-year-old parolee crashed a stolen Subaru during a police pursuit and tried to hide in an El Cajon garage, but a police dog sniffed him out, La Mesa police said.

Herbert Baker, who had $2,200 in cash and varying forms of identification when arrested, was expected to be booked for on suspicion of auto theft, possessing stolen property, felony evading and violating his parole, La Mesa police Lt. David Bond said.

The chase began near La Mesa Boulevard and University Avenue around 3:30 a.m., he said, when a patrol officer checked the license plate against a law enforcement data base and determined the 2006 vehicle had been stolen. When and where was not disclosed.

Baker sped away from police and into El Cajon, where he crashed through a security barrier at apartments in the 700 block of Pierce Drive, Bond said.

Baker ran, and a search ensued, he said.

A dog finally picked up his scent, and police found Baker inside a car in a garage in the 4200 block of Primrose Drive, Bond said.

At the police station, Bond got sick and was taken to Grossmont Hospital, he said.
