Five dozen prospective jurors filled out questionnaires Tuesday for the trial of a La Jolla man accused of throwing a sucker-punch that killed a professional surfer during a fight in front of the victim's home last year.

Seth Cravens, 22, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of 24-year-old Emery Kauanui. Cravens is also charged with making a criminal threat, battery and assault causing great bodily injury stemming from unrelated attacks between 2005 and 2007.

He faces 15 years to life in prison if convicted of the murder count.

Four other young men from La Jolla -- Orlando Osuna, Matthew Yanke, Eric House and Hank Hendricks -- pleaded guilty to charges stemming from Kauanui's death and were sentenced to time in local custody.

The defendants got into a fight with Kauanui on May 24, 2007, following a drink-spilling incident at the nearby La Jolla Brew House.

During the fight, Cravens allegedly punched Kauanui, causing him to fall backward and hit his head. The victim died at a hospital four days later.

After a preliminary hearing in May, Judge John Einhorn ruled that the defendants were not part of a criminal street gang as prosecutors alleged.

Jury selection is expected to resume Thursday in Einhorn's courtroom.
