SAN DIEGO -- A woman brutally raped for two hours in her Escondido home feels justice has not been served in her case.Tammy Chavez was left with damaged organs and now has to wear a diaper for the rest of her life as a result of the attack. The attack happened six years ago, but the damage is permanent.
The rapist, Victor Navarro, was sentenced to 8 years in prison. It was a sentence that Chavez said is not long enough."He gets a little slap on the hand and then he gets to walk away and then he gets to and live his life, and I have to put up with all this …," said Chavez. It is no surprise why Chavez's anger still remains."Every time he lost his erection he would use a foreign object and jab it into me. He cut out my sphincter muscle. He ripped apart the nerves behind my bladder …," said Chavez.Navarro rented a room in Chavez's house. He raped her in the early morning hours on June 17, 2002.The physical and emotional scars are still there."You know how many times I wish that I could just walk to the bathroom and sit down and go to the bathroom without having to put this and take this and use this and do that?" said Chavez. While Chavez lived a life of tubes, injections and medications, her rapist remained free. But this year Navarro was arrested and sentenced to 8 years in prison."Now in eight years he'll get out and he'll be sent back to Mexico and he'll go on living his life. That's not the case for me; he gave me a life sentence," said Chavez.Chavez's "life sentence" includes continuous counseling."Tammy and her husband are my heroes. They have endured the unendurable," said marriage and family counselor Chuck Ryder.Despite her traumatic experience, Chavez is proactive. She is writing and talking to lawmakers in hopes of extending rapists' prison time."If I could just help one person, then it will all be worth it," said Chavez.Chavez lives with her husband and six children -- taking every day one day at a time.Chavez has received responses from several assemblymen. They said her requests will be reviewed for the upcoming 2009 session.
