OCEANSIDE, Calif. -- A vehicle struck and severely injured a pedestrian Friday on Interstate 5 in the far northern reaches of San Diego County.

The major-injury crash occurred shortly after 10:30 a.m. on the northbound side of the freeway, near Harbor Drive in Oceanside, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Medics took the injured person to Oceanside Municipal Airport, a dispatcher said. From there, an air ambulance took the patient to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla.

The pedestrian's name, gender and condition were not immediately available.

The crash led to heavy congestion in the area for about an hour, the CHP reported.
