UPDATED: 11:16 am PDT October 10, 2008

The city of La Mesa received two federal grants totaling $975,390 to construct new sidewalks and make walking and biking to school safer, it was announced Friday.

The grants are from the federal Safe Routes to School Program, according to Gregory Humora, the city's director of public works.

The first, worth $522,300, will be used to construct a sidewalk on Glen Street, Humor said.

Another $453,090 will be used over the next four years for programs that encourage elementary and middle school students to walk and bicycle to school and do so safely, he said.
