MTS Unveils Natural Gas-Powered Buses

POSTED: 4:36 pm PDT October 7, 2008
UPDATED: 4:38 pm PDT October 7, 2008

The Metropolitan Transit System's brand news bus will be operated solely on compressed natural gas.

The new 60-foot bus was unveiled Tuesday at the San Diego Convention Center.

The bus features ramps for the disabled riders and could carry up to 80 people.

The bus will replace older, diesel-powered buses.

"When we get these buses into service we will have converted 70 percent of our bus fleet to compressed natural gas and our goal by 2011 is to be 100 percent," said MTS Board Chairman Harry Mathis.

The transit district will put 26 of the new buses on the street, including to and from Charger games in a few weeks.

The $20 million price tag for the new fleet was paid for through a state proposition.
