Judge Stops $100K Severance Check For Ex-SEDC President

UPDATED: 10:21 pm PDT October 6, 2008

A Superior Court judge Monday issued a temporary restraining order barring the Southeast Economic Development Corporation from making a $100,350 severance payment to its former president, Carolyn Smith.

The order, by Judge Jay Bloom, came in response to a lawsuit filed by a local activist, Ian Trowbridge, who claims the severance payment was discussed and voted upon in a closed session, in violation of the Brown Act.

Bloom ordered the payment suspended until a hearing on the lawsuit which he set for November 7, 2008.
