SAN DIEGO -- County workers were trying to figure out what caused a pipeline to break and spill more than 3 million gallons of water into a remote section of Mission Trails Regional Park, a water authority spokesman said Monday. The spill occurred early Sunday and involved a 72-inch pipe built in 1977, according to the San Diego County Water Authority.Service to homes and surrounding business was not affected.
Workers began accessing the problem with the pipe late Sunday night and continued their investigation Monday, said John Liarakos, a spokesman for the water authority. There was no way of knowing how long the investigation might take, reported Liarakos. The broken pipeline delivered untreated water to the city of San Diego's Alvarado Treatment Plant, Lower Otay Treatment Plant and the Sweetwater Authority's Perdue Treatment Plant.
