SAN DIEGO -- Words On Wheels, also known as the WOW Mobile, is a trailer filled with books, computers, and resources for National City families."We offer books, videos, Leap Pads, and Leap Pad books -- which are interactive reading tools," said Dee Gansalves from the WOW Mobile.
The First 5 Commission of San Diego funds the WOW Mobile, as part of its effort to prepare children for kindergarten."Research shows that from birth young children are making the connection in their brain that provide them with language and the skills that make them good readers," National City librarian Anne Campbell said.Luis Vanegas proved that by reading to his children."I have older kids and we started reading to them when they were babies. And they pick up their vocabulary a lot better," Vanegas said. But with only one library in National City, many families have limited access to books."You can imagine if you're a mom with three children under the age of three, it's difficult to get around and take them to the library all the time," Gansalves said. The WOW Mobile takes books to families in weekly rounds to apartment complexes, Head Start schools and medical clinics and bring books to children who will hopefully grow up to be good students. The First 5 Commission of San Diego funds other local programs, aimed at preparing children to enter kindergarten. These programs help parents raise QKids -- quality kids-- by focusing on improving their physical, social and emotional growth.
