Oceanside Police Lieutenant Cleared Of Abuse Charges

POSTED: 6:25 pm PDT September 11, 2008

Domestic violence charges will not be filed against an Oceanside police lieutenant arrested on suspicion of choking his former girlfriend and dragging her through his Carlsbad home, the District Attorney's Office announced Thursday.

The case against 46-year-old Lt. Shawn Murray was rejected because there wasn't enough evidence to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt to a jury, District Attorney's Office spokesman Paul Levikow said.

Murray -- an 18-year veteran of the Oceanside Police Department -- was arrested in the early morning hours of Aug. 18 at his home in the 3500 block of Flat Rock Street, after Carlsbad police received a call for help from his ex-girlfriend.

The alleged victim said her neck was red and sore and that she was pushed down and dragged around by her pants and left arm, according to Carlsbad police Lt. Marc Reno.

Murray's attorney, Kerry Armstrong, said today his client ended the relationship with his ex-girlfriend two months before last month's incident and she did not handle it well.

The night of the incident, the woman showed up unannounced at Murray's home and he had to physically remove her from the residence and then from his truck, Armstrong said.

Murray has been returned to full duty with the Oceanside Police Department, Armstrong said.

Murray didn't immediately return a reporter's call seeking reaction to the decision not to charge him.
