Oceanside City Hall Evacuated Over Suspicious Package

UPDATED: 6:48 pm PDT September 3, 2008

A report of a possibly suspicious package sent to Oceanside City Hall prompted evacuations of the facility Wednesday while a bomb squad determined that the box contained a legitimate equipment delivery.

A Fed Ex employee was carrying the parcel into a second-floor mailroom at the North Coast Highway government complex about 2:15 p.m. when he noticed a beeping sound coming from inside it and decided to report the situation, police Sgt. Kelan Poorman said.

Though officials believed the box, which was addressed to a fire battalion chief, likely contained an order of emergency-services equipment, they decided to evacuate City Hall and the adjacent public library and call in a sheriff's explosives team to make sure, the sergeant said.

The bomb squad used a remote X-ray device to check the package's contents, which turned out to be three "hot sticks" -- devices used by emergency crews to determine whether electric lines are live or deactivated, according to Poorman.

Authorities gave an all-clear about 4:15 p.m., allowing workers and citizens to re-enter the buildings.

About 175 people were cleared out of the complex during the incident, Poorman said.

"Everybody was calm," he added.
