Burnham Institute Receives Record Grant

SAN DIEGO -- The Burnham Institute for Medical Research has been awarded nearly $100 million to be part of a federally funded network that will identify parts of the body that trigger disease, it was reported Wednesday.At $98 million, the grant from the National Institutes of Health is the largest ever awarded to the La Jolla institute, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.Burnham is the second local research institute to receive its largest- ever grant this week.On Tuesday, the Scripps Research Institute announced that it would be receiving more than $80 million from the NIH.Scripps will use its money to be part of the same federally funded network as Burnham.The goal of the network is to show how different parts of the body could be treated with drugs to prevent the progression or symptoms of a disease, according to the Union-Tribune.Both Burnham and Scripps will receive grant funds over the next six years, the newspaper reported.
