Classes, Traffic Begin At SDSU

SAN DIEGO -- More than 7,300 new undergraduates will begin classes Tuesday at San Diego State University.This year's incoming class includes about 4,100 first-time freshmen and 3,175 transfer students with an average grade point average of 3.47 and SAT score of 1048, according to the university.SDSU received a record 62,350 undergraduate applications for the fall semester, up 7.4 percent from the previous year.
With a total student body of more than 34,000 headed back to classes Tuesday, SDSU officials urged students to consider alternative transportation, such as taking the San Diego Trolley.Last fall, 4,609 discounted trolley passes were purchased by students through the Metropolitan Transit System, according to SDSU. That's up from 3,000 the previous year.For those who bike to campus, there will be about 40 bike racks located around SDSU and in front of buildings.There will be about 70 people, including campus police and contracted personnel to help direct traffic and facilitate parking around SDSU, according to the university.In total, SDSU has more than 14,000 parking spaces available for faculty, staff, students and visitors.Students were also asked to arrive early, especially for classes before noon, use alternative traffic routes, plan ahead and take the free SDSU Red/Black Shuttle.
