CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- One passenger was killed Friday, another was critically injured and the driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI in connection with a rollover crash in Chula Vista, authorities said.

Victor Adrian Sanchez, 22, of Chula Vista, was in the backseat of a 2006 Mercedes-Benz sedan around 2:50 a.m. when it crashed into a fence and lighting fixture and overturned several times before coming to rest at Third Avenue and L Street, according to a Chula Vista fire dispatcher and the San Diego County medical examiner's office.

Sanchez died at the scene.

Another passenger was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition, and the driver was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, he said.

The driver also was arrested on suspicion of drunken-driving, Chula Vista police spokesman Rick Rhodes said.

Witnesses said that the vehicle was speeding on westbound L Street moments before the crash.
