UPDATED: 5:26 am PDT August 29, 2008

A Bay Terraces man suspected of domestic violence surrendered to authorities Friday after barricading himself in his home for nearly 12 hours, police said.

Officers were called to the man's home on Dunwood Way, near Ledgewood Lane, around 3 p.m. Thursday after his former girlfriend reported he had assaulted her, San Diego police Sgt. Alan Hayward said.

The 48-year-old man refused to come out of his home after officers arrived, and a standoff ensued, the sergeant said, adding that the woman managed to flee from the home.

Neighboring homes were evacuated Thursday night while police negotiators talked to the man, Hayward said.

The man, whose name was not immediately released, surrendered at 2:30 a.m., according to Hayward, who said no one was hurt in standoff.
