SAN DIEGO -- The aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk will leave its longtime home port of San Diego for the final time Thursday for a voyage to Bremerton, Wash., where it will be decommissioned. The Kitty Hawk was based in San Diego for 36 years before it moved to Yokosuka, Japan. The second-oldest ship in the fleet, and the only conventionally powered aircraft carrier, returned to San Diego Bay on Aug. 7. It is being replaced in Japan by the USS George Washington. The Navy said about 1,600 crew members will make the trip north along with 65 former sailors who once served on the 47-year-old ship. Many of the ex-sailors are "plankowners," part of the original crew.
Decommissioning is tentatively scheduled for January 2009.
