SAN DIEGO -- A former Helix High School geography teacher and girls' soccer coach who had sex with a 17-year-old female student at a hotel was sentenced Wednesday to probation and 365 days in custody.

Gary Wilcox, 44, who had taught at Helix High since 1995, pleaded guilty July 24 to having unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor.

El Cajon Judge Patricia Cookson told the defendant he could do his time in a work furlough program if he had a job.

The judge did not require Wilcox to register as a sex offender.

Wilcox was arrested May 18 at his Spring Valley home and was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the criminal case.
