A 36-year-old motorist was hospitalized Monday with serious injuries that he suffered in a traffic accident that killed his passenger, a young Encinitas man, authorities said.

Salvador Ventura, 19, was killed around 10 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of West San Marcos Boulevard and Acacia Drive, according to San Diego County sheriff's Deputy Tammy Bennetts. Ventura was a passenger in a 2004 Jeep Laredo driven by 36-year-old Edward Perez of Escondido, she said.

Perez was traveling eastbound on West San Marcos Boulevard when he ran a red light and the Jeep collided with a 2007 Honda Pilot turning left onto westbound West San Marcos Boulevard from southbound Acacia Drive, Bennetts said.

Paramedics took Perez to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido with serious injuries, according to the deputy. Bennetts said Ventura was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver of the Honda, 50-year-old Jane Yamashita of San Marcos, was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

A dog in the Jeep was also killed in the crash, Bennetts said.
