VISTA, CALIF. -- A 36-year-old man with a history of theft and drug-related felonies was in custody Friday on suspicion of stealing a vehicle and leading authorities on a nearly 5-mile chase that began in Vista and ended in San Marcos, a sheriff's sergeant said.Deputies using a LoJack recovery system spotted a stolen 1992 Ford Explorer at the La Quinta Inn on Sycamore Avenue in Vista around 8:30 p.m. Thursday and attempted to pull the vehicle over, San Diego County sheriff's Sgt. Mark Johnston said. The driver of the Explorer, Rogelio Valentino Naverrete, refused to comply, and a chase began, the sergeant said.
The pursuit lasted for 4.8 miles, going through Vista Business Park and ending in the 1200 block of Island Drive in San Marcos with Valentino, a teenage girl and another man fleeing the Explorer on foot, according to Johnston.Deputies used a Taser stun gun to subdue Naverrete and take him into custody, Johnson said, adding that a 17-year-old girl who is a documented runaway was taken into custody a short time later. She was charged with possession of a stolen check and released to her mother's custody, Johnston said.Naverrete, who was out on $380,000 bond for seven other theft and drug-related felonies, was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, felony evading, possession of stolen property, felony child endangerment and committing a felony while out on bail. The other man seen running from the Explorer remained at large Friday, Johnston said.
