Due to the driest conditions in recorded history, most areas of the Cleveland National Forest are being temporarily closed to the public, 10News reported.

The closure order takes effect Friday, Oct. 11, and will remain in place until substantial rainfall occurs, according to forest supervisor Anne Fege.

"Fires this summer have burned with such intensity that they are almost impossible to control. Fuel moisture is at historic record lows. We must do everything possible to prevent additional large fires in our forest," said Fege.

"Recreation will still be allowed in those developed areas that we can manage more closely and which have easy access for possible fire suppression, but no campfires will be allowed anywhere. Restricting use in remote areas during this time of extreme fire hazard will help to prevent catastrophic wildland fires," Fege added.

Remote camping is prohibited in all areas of the forest. Hunting will be allowed only in Agua Tibia Wilderness and Forest Service lands adjacent to Indian Flats.

There will still be many recreation opportunities available to the public. Developed campgrounds and picnic areas listed below will remain open to the public.

Pacific Crest Trail is open through the forest
