EL CAJON, Calif. -- A letter-writing campaign is being orchestrated to prevent Sycuan Casino from obtaining a liquor license, it was reported Monday. The East County casino failed in its last attempt 15 years ago to obtain a liquor license when an administrative law judge found that alcohol sales would create a traffic hazard, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported. The Dehesa Valley Community Council opposed the application then and is behind the latest letter-writing campaign, according to the newspaper."We're trying to put together a case and information to send in protest and get as many people that are interested in it to protest," Council President Pat Riggs said.Sycuan is the only Indian casino in the county without a liquor license. It did not appeal the judge's decision on the alcohol issue 15 years ago.Sycuan officials said they did not appeal because at the time, they mainly served bingo players and the demand was low, the Union-Tribune reported. But since then, the casino has expanded and now has 2,000 slot machines."It's fundamentally a different situation today than it was then," Adam Day, assistant tribal manager, told the newspaper. "The tribe spent millions of dollars on road and traffic safety improvements in and around Dehesa Road and Sycuan Road."
